Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band from Gdańsk and one of the most renowned and influential extreme metal acts to emerge from Poland onto the global scene. Formed in 1991 initially under the name Baphomet by guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter Adam “Nergal” Darski, the band started out playing raw, Scandinavian inspired black metal before gradually evolving towards a more complex black/death hybrid. Behemoth started firmly rooted in traditional black metal but gradually developed a unique black/death hybrid sound, often cited as an example of a band transcending strict genre boundaries.
In Poland Nergal has become a recognizable media figure beyond music, appearing on TV shows and frequently commenting on church–state relations, which brought Behemoth visibility outside the underground metal circuit.
The court case over tearing up a Bible onstage turned into a long running legal dispute about artistic freedom, and international media often reference Behemoth as a key example of artists openly challenging blasphemy laws.
„The Satanist” is widely regarded as a turning point in the band’s career, combining extreme metal intensity with more open song structures and richer instrumentation, attracting listeners from outside the strict extreme metal fan base.
