Akcent
Akcent is one of the most recognizable disco polo groups in Poland, founded in 1989 in Bielsk Podlaski by Zenon Martyniuk and Mariusz Anikiej. The project started with a solid background, since both founders had already performed in earlier bands, Martyniuk in Akord and Anikiej in Centrum. The band’s earliest confirmed recorded release was the 1991 cassette “Akcent 1,” which included early songs such as “Chłopak z gitarą,” “Dajcie mi gitarę,” and “Tabu tibu.” After returning from Belgium, the group was reactivated, and the releases “Dajcie mi gitarę” and “Słuchajcie chłopcy” helped expand its reach. A key breakthrough came with “Stary Cygan,” which entered the top ten of Radio Katowice’s 1993 Song of the Year...
Artist Trivia
- Akcent grew out of its founders’ earlier bands, with Zenon Martyniuk coming from Akord and Mariusz Anikiej from Centrum.
- After returning from Belgium, Zenek and Mariusz reactivated Akcent and quickly released two cassettes, “Dajcie mi gitarę” with refreshed older songs and “Słuchajcie chłopcy” with new material.
- The song “Stary Cygan” reached the top ten of Radio Katowice’s nationwide Song of the Year poll in 1993, which helped push the band into disco polo’s top tier.
- The 1994 album “Życie to są chwile” strengthened the group’s standing, and songs like “Mała figlarka” and “Dźwięki strun” spread well beyond the genre’s usual audience.
