Marc Almond
Marc Almond is an English singer and songwriter best known as the voice of Soft Cell, the duo he formed with Dave Ball. His work spans synth-pop and new wave as well as cabaret, chanson, orchestral pop and theatrical interpretations of other writers’ songs. He has a distinctive ability to turn even a dance track into a story about loneliness, desire or life on society’s margins. Alongside mainstream success, he has consistently pursued less predictable projects rooted in alternative music and theatre. He grew up in Southport in northern England. As a teenager, he worked in the local theatre and at the seaside fairground, while singing covers in a local band. He went on to study fine art at Leeds Polytechnic,...
Artist Trivia
- “Tainted Love” was not written by Soft Cell. The duo transformed a song previously recorded by Gloria Jones into an electronic hit, and their recording was later sampled in Rihanna’s “SOS”.
- Almond formed Marc and the Mambas before Soft Cell’s first split. The collective let him pursue more theatrical and experimental music alongside the duo.
- Almond has described “Torment and Toreros” as “a nervous breakdown put to music”, a phrase that captures the record’s emotional intensity.
- He recorded Jacques Brel songs and French chanson; according to his official biography, Brel’s estate held his interpretations in particularly high regard.
