Mery Spolsky is one of the most distinctive figures in recent Polish alternative pop. Born in Warsaw as Maria Ewa Żak, she developed from the beginning not only as a singer, but also as a lyricist, composer, producer, and an artist who very consciously builds her visual world and public identity. Before creating the Mery Spolsky project, she worked in the psychedelic band Makijaż and later in the duo Różowe Okulary. Before she began working as Mery Spolsky, she performed in the psychedelic band Makijaż and later in the duo Różowe Okulary with Kuba Bąkała, so her path toward a solo identity passed through very different musical aesthetics.
She graduated from music school in violin, studied English philology and American studies at the University of Warsaw, and also studied screenwriting at the Warsaw Film School, which helps explain her strong sense of language, concept, and visual form.
Her debut as Mery Spolsky was noticed immediately, because at the Grechuta Festival she won second prize for her interpretation of “Śpij, bajki śnij”.
Her 2017 album Miło było pana poznać brought her Fryderyk nominations for phonographic debut of the year and electronica album of the year.
