Spotify and Universal sign landmark AI deal for licensed fan‑made covers

Spotify and Universal Music Group announced new recording and publishing agreements that open the door for legally licensed AI‑generated covers and remixes based on UMG’s catalog. The feature will roll out as a paid add‑on for Spotify Premium subscribers, effectively turning user‑generated AI tracks into a new, licensed content layer with revenue sharing for rightsholders. Participation will be opt‑in, meaning artists and songwriters represented by UMG will have to actively agree for their songs to be included.

All tracks created under this model will be playable for every Spotify user, not just Premium subscribers. Both companies frame the deal around three key pillars: creator consent, clear attribution and a revenue‑sharing model that lets artists and songwriters directly benefit from AI‑driven covers and remixes. Financial terms and the initial roster of participating artists have not been made public, but the agreement is presented as a test case for how mainstream streaming can monetize AI.

For the wider industry, this is one of the first instances of a major label and a global streaming platform formally integrating AI creation tools into a licensed environment. By doing so, UMG and Spotify signal that instead of trying to push fan experiments with AI off the platform, they want to bring them into a controlled, monetized ecosystem. If successful, similar models could be extended to other areas, from podcasts to in‑app production tools.
