Kortez, born Łukasz Federkiewicz, is a Polish singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who emerged as one of the most important new voices in Polish alternative music in the second half of the 2010s. He was born in Krosno, grew up in Iwonicz, studied piano and trombone, and later developed his guitar playing and songwriting craft. His path to recognition was not typical for a pop debut artist. Kortez was noticed extremely quickly after his debut, as “Bumerang” became one of the most talked about Polish albums of 2015 and established him with unusual force for an artist without earlier mainstream backing.
His first concert took place at the Songwriters Festival in Opole in 2014, and only two years later an official live bootleg was released, which shows how fast he built a dedicated audience.
Lyrics are central to his artistic identity, yet Kortez has openly acknowledged that a substantial part of his repertoire was co-written with other authors, especially Agata Trafalska.
His public image long relied on restraint, rawness, and emotional understatement, which paradoxically became one of the most distinctive features of his stage presence.
