Krystyna Giżowska is one of the most recognizable Polish singers associated with mainstream melodic pop, especially linked to the 1980s and to a repertoire built on tunefulness, emotional directness and strong festival appeal. For a broad audience she remains the voice of songs such as “Nie było ciebie tyle lat,” “Przeżyłam z tobą tyle lat,” “Złote obrączki” and “Samotność czeka na peronie,” tracks that became lasting staples of Polish radio entertainment. She was born in Wałbrzych, but an important part of her early artistic path was connected with Koszalin and the Pomeranian region. Long before she became a radio star, she spent years developing on stage with the Song and Dance Ensemble Transportowiec, which gave her a much deeper performance background than her easy-listening image might suggest today.
In 1981 she won the Grand Prix at the Baltic Countries Festival in Karlshamn, an important distinction that came before her biggest commercial peak in Poland.
The year 1984 was a double breakthrough, because while “Nie było ciebie tyle lat” drew enormous public response, the Sopot Grand Prix itself was awarded to her for “Blue Box”.
One of the paradoxes of her career is that audiences most often remember “Nie było ciebie tyle lat,” even though her biggest festival award came for a different song, “Blue Box”.
