Krzysztof Skiba is one of those artists who cannot be defined by a single profession. He is a singer, lyricist, satirist, columnist, showman, and happening organizer, and in Polish popular culture he is most strongly remembered as the frontman of Big Cyc and a central figure of stage and media political satire. He was born on 7 July 1964 in Gdańsk, completed secondary school there, and later graduated in cultural studies from the University of Łódź. Big Cyc was initially meant as a one-off joke, yet it became one of the longest-lasting and most recognizable satirical rock bands in Poland.
Before becoming widely known as a musician, Skiba was active in opposition circles including RSA, the Freedom and Peace movement, and the Orange Alternative, organizing happenings for which he was repeatedly detained by the communist authorities.
In 1985, during the Jarocin festival, he was arrested and spent three months in detention, one of the strongest markers of his opposition-era biography.
He co-created and performed satirical Big Cyc hits such as “Makumba,” “Berlin Zachodni,” “Facet to świnia,” and the song connected with “Świat według Kiepskich,” all of which outlived the rock scene and entered broader Polish pop culture.
