Lech Janerka
Lech Janerka is a singer, bassist, composer and lyricist from Wrocław, and one of the most distinctive figures in Polish rock. His music moves between post-punk, new wave, alternative rock and sonic experimentation, while his writing is equally recognisable for irony, absurd imagery, invented words and an interest in individual freedom. He co-founded the influential band Klaus Mitffoch before establishing a career under his own name. His wife Bożena Janerka has remained a crucial creative partner, her cello giving many of his records and live performances their distinctive sound. Before Klaus Mitffoch existed, Lech and Bożena Janerka performed together at student song festivals. Culture.pl documents a joint...
Artist Trivia
- Lech and Bożena Janerka performed together as early as 1975, before Klaus Mitffoch was formed. Albums released under Lech’s name later remained the product of their long-running collaboration.
- They built their first solo-era record around the unusual pairing of bass and cello. Electronic processing helped create Bożena’s distinctive instrumental sound.
- The “Historia podwodna” sessions at Tonpress coincided with the Chernobyl disaster, adding historical context to the album’s bleak atmosphere.
- Janerka returned to Wrocław from New York with a Yamaha sampler, which helped shape the experimental sound of “Ur”.
