Lora Szafran is one of the most distinctive Polish jazz vocalists, an artist who moves naturally between jazz, literary song and a more accessible stage format. Her name is deeply rooted in the jazz scene, but wider audiences also remember her through pop-jazz projects and important duet work from the 1990s. She was born in Krosno and studied at the Jazz and Popular Music Department of the Academy of Music in Katowice, graduating with distinction in 1986. While still a student, she entered the professional concert circuit through her work with the band Walk Away. While still a student, she worked with Walk Away, one of the key Polish jazz groups of its generation, which gave her a strong entrance into the professional scene.
From 1988 she performed with New Presentation, and the group’s album “Lonesome Dancer” was recognized as Jazz Album of the Year 1989, showing how much of her rise was shaped through ensemble work as well as solo projects.
In 1990 she won the Grand Prix and the Amber Nightingale at the Sopot Festival, which opened the door to much broader recognition beyond the jazz audience.
For mainstream listeners, she remains especially associated with her duet work with Mieczysław Szcześniak, particularly the song “Moja magia”, still remembered as one of the notable Polish duets of the 1990s.
