Nouvelle Vague is a French musical collective founded in Paris in 2003 by producer Marc Collin and guitarist Olivier Libaux. Its concept brings together two seemingly distant worlds: punk and new wave songs, and the gentle rhythms of bossa nova, acoustic arrangements and intimate vocals. The name connects these ideas. “Nouvelle vague”, “new wave” and “bossa nova” all evoke a new wave, while French New Wave cinema provides another cultural reference. Artist Trivia
- The name connects French New Wave culture, new wave music and Brazilian bossa nova through a shared idea of a “new wave”.
- Some early singers did not know the original recordings. This helped them avoid reproducing the original performers’ vocal mannerisms.
- “In a Manner of Speaking” is a Tuxedomoon song, not a Nouvelle Vague original. Camille sings the collective’s version.
- On “3”, musicians associated with the original songs joined their reinterpretations, including Martin Gore and Ian McCulloch.
