Varius Manx is a Polish pop rock band formed in 1989 in Łódź by Robert Janson and brothers Michał and Paweł Marciniak. The name combines the Latin word “varius” (varied, diverse) with Manx, a tailless cat breed, and has been explained by the band as either “a strange Manx cat” or a metaphor for musical diversity. Initially the group focused mainly on instrumental music, and only later did the vocalists join, eventually becoming one of the key factors in the band’s success. Varius Manx began primarily as an instrumental project, which set it apart from many Polish pop bands that were built around a lead singer from the very start.
The arrival of Anita Lipnicka was the moment when the band “found its formula,” with the subsequent albums recorded with her achieving major commercial and live success.
Over time, the constantly changing female lead vocal became one of the most recognizable motifs in the band’s history, and each era (Lipnicka, Stankiewicz, Kuszyńska and others) has its own devoted fanbase.
Varius Manx amassed one of the largest collections of gold and platinum records in Poland, which was recognized with a special diamond award emphasizing the scale of their commercial achievements.
