Adam Makowicz
Adam Makowicz, born Adam Matyszkowicz, belongs to the very small group of Polish jazz musicians who built a lasting and widely recognized career in the United States as well. He is first and foremost a pianist, but his importance goes beyond virtuosity alone, because he developed a personal language that connects jazz piano tradition, Romantic sensibility, and both American and European repertoire. He was born on 18 August 1940 in Gnojnik in the Zaolzie region and was raised in Poland after the war, mainly in Rybnik. He was classically trained from an early age and studied at the conservatory in Kraków, but as a teenager he turned decisively toward jazz after hearing Willis Conover’s broadcasts and recordings...
Artist Trivia
- Makowicz left the classical path after becoming obsessed with Willis Conover’s radio broadcasts and the playing of Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, a risky choice in communist-era Poland.
- Jazz Darings, the group he co-founded with Tomasz Stańko, has often been described as one of the first European bands to play in the style of Ornette Coleman, placing him very early in the story of European free jazz.
- In the 1970s he moved boldly into electric fusion, performing with Michał Urbaniak on Fender piano and clavinet before later returning largely to the acoustic piano.
- His American breakthrough was unusually strong because he was supported by Willis Conover, Benny Goodman, and the legendary producer John Hammond, who invited him to the United States and produced the album “Adam.”
