Włodzimierz Nahorny is one of the central figures in the history of Polish jazz, an artist whose work spans piano, saxophone, flute, composition, and arranging. His stature comes not only from the length of his career but also from the unusual stylistic breadth of his output, ranging from modern and free jazz to songs, film music, and original jazz interpretations of classical repertoire. Nahorny wrote the music for “Jej portret,” one of the best-known Polish postwar songs, which originally existed as an instrumental composition before Jonasz Kofta added lyrics.
In 1967, he received an individual award in Vienna directly from Duke Ellington, a milestone that became one of the defining moments of his international recognition.
During the 1960s and 1970s, he moved fluently between jazz and popular music, collaborating not only with jazz artists but also with Breakout and Novi Singers.
