Joka, born Michał Marten, was one of the most distinctive figures in 1990s Polish rap and a co-creator of the Silesian hip-hop school that strongly shaped the development of the wider scene. He is remembered above all as a member of Kaliber 44, founded in 1993 in Katowice together with Abradab, Magik, and Jajonasz. The safest musical debut date is therefore 1993, because that was when his activity in Kaliber 44 began. His phonographic breakthrough came three years later with “Księga Tajemnicza. - Joka co-founded Kaliber 44 in its most formative and now legendary lineup with Abradab and Magik, which means his importance went far beyond being just another member of the group.
- Kaliber 44’s debut album “Księga Tajemnicza. Prolog” is consistently described as a classic and a milestone of Polish rap, and Joka was one of the defining voices of that sound.
- After Magik left, Joka and Abradab still recorded “3:44,” an album that won a Fryderyk award, showing that he also helped shape the group’s later, more mature phase.
- After Kaliber 44 went on hiatus, he moved to the United States and worked manual jobs for around three years, which makes his story quite different from many rappers who stayed constantly visible in the media.
