SBB is one of the most important bands in the history of Polish rock, founded in 1971 in Siemianowice Śląskie by Józef Skrzek, Apostolis Anthimos and Jerzy Piotrowski. The group began as Silesian Blues Band, and from the start its sound combined blues rock, jazz rock and a highly improvisational stage approach. In the first phase of its career, the musicians caught the attention of Czesław Niemen, who brought them into his lineup, creating Grupa Niemen with them. Before SBB became an independent brand, its core musicians were absorbed into Czesław Niemen’s lineup in 1971, forming Grupa Niemen and recording four albums with him.
Two tracks from Ode to Venus, “Fly Over the Fields of Yellow Sunflowers” and “Rock for Mack”, were recorded by SBB musicians without Niemen, which makes them the lineup’s first officially released recordings.
The phrase “Szukaj, Burz, Buduj”, translated as “Search, Break, Build”, was not the band’s original name but a later concept introduced by promoter Franciszek Walicki after the Niemen period.
The 1974 live debut album SBB sold so quickly that its black market price reportedly reached four times the regular retail price.
