Stanisław Soyka
Stanisław Soyka, born Stanisław Sojka, was one of the most important Polish artists to combine the craft of a jazz musician with the accessibility of a singer and the sensibility of an author. He was a vocalist, pianist, guitarist, violinist, composer, arranger, and lyricist, and for decades his work resisted simple divisions between jazz, pop, and literary song. He was born on 26 April 1959 in Żory and built his musical foundations from childhood, singing in a choir at the age of seven and studying violin from an early stage. He continued his education in music schools in Gliwice and Katowice and later studied composition and arranging at the Academy of Music in Katowice. The safest debut point is 1979,...
Artist Trivia
- Soyka began singing at the age of seven in a church choir, so his musical foundation came not from the club circuit but from very early choral and sacred practice.
- His first major breakthrough came through two different openings at once, the solo album “Don’t You Cry” and “Blublula” recorded with Wojciech Karolak’s trio, placing him immediately between personal authorship and the jazz scene.
- He could move between very different idioms, from jazz and soul to literary song, sacred music, and even elements of rap, without losing his unmistakable vocal identity.
- The album “Soyka Sings Ellington” is one of the key examples of how naturally he positioned himself inside the American jazz tradition while remaining unmistakably a Polish artist.
