In 1976, “The New York Times” named her vocalist of the year, right behind Ella Fitzgerald, which was a major international acknowledgment of her stature.
She developed a highly individual vocal language based on treating the voice like an instrument, using scat, electronics and modulators in ways that made her improvisation instantly recognizable.
She performed or recorded with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Ron Carter, Jaco Pastorius and Gil Evans, placing her within an elite international jazz network.
