VOX was founded by Witold Paszt and from the outset was designed as more than a strong vocal act, it was built as a fully staged ensemble with choreography, costumes and repertoire aimed at a broad audience. Its direct precursor was the Warsaw-based Victoria Singers project from 1977, out of which the actual VOX line-up emerged. In its classic form, the group centered on Witold Paszt, Andrzej Kozioł, Ryszard Rynkowski and Jerzy Słota, and its major public debut came in April 1979 in Poznań. VOX grew out of the Victoria Singers project, and the push toward an all-male quartet reportedly came after a rehearsal at Warsaw’s Bristol Hotel, when the two female singers decided the group should continue without them.
Before making its stage debut, the group spent months working not only on vocals but also on choreography, tap dancing and English, which was an unusually polished approach in late-1970s Poland.
The visual identity of VOX was shaped by major fashion designers including Jerzy Antkowiak, Grażyna Hasse, Barbara Hoff and Bernard Hanaoka, which helped turn the act into a full stage spectacle rather than a standard vocal group.
“Bananowy Song” became the group’s signature anthem after festival breakthroughs, and VOX collected major distinctions in Sopot, Bratislava and Rostock.
