Skaldowie are one of the most important and distinctive groups in the history of Polish popular music, founded in Kraków in 1965. From the beginning, the band’s core identity was shaped by brothers Andrzej and Jacek Zieliński, who defined both its sound and its compositional direction. The group made its official debut in October 1965 at the 2nd Kraków Song Exchange, where it won first place with “Moja czarownica.” Within the next two years, Skaldowie became a major presence on the national scene, winning festivals, appearing on radio and in film, and building a reputation based on both hit songs and strong musicianship. Skaldowie developed a highly distinctive sound early on by mixing youth-oriented pop and rock with Podhale folk influences and elements of classical music, which set them apart from most Polish beat groups of the 1960s.
At the 1968 Opole festival, the band was reportedly called back for repeated encores of “Wszystko mi mówi, że mnie ktoś pokochał,” making it one of the group’s most legendary festival moments.
The album Krywań, Krywań is often treated as one of the high points of Polish art rock, showing that Skaldowie were far more than just a hit-making pop band.
The group also appeared in films, including Cierpkie głogi, Mocne uderzenie and Kulig, while Andrzej Zieliński was active as a composer beyond the band format.
