Magda Umer was one of the most important figures in Polish sung poetry and literary song in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century. She was born in Warsaw on 9 October 1949, and from the beginning her artistic path was tied more to text, interpretation, and emotional precision than to conventional stage showmanship. While still a student, she began performing in the “Abakus” cabaret and later became associated with “Stodoła”. In 1969 she won third prize at the Winter Student Song Exchange in Opole for performing “Jeśli myślisz, że ja ciebie nie kocham,” and in the same year she made her debut at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. She was born on exactly the same calendar day as Agnieszka Osiecka, only 13 years later, which is often recalled as symbolic given their later artistic connection.
Her early stage path ran through student cabarets, first “Abakus” and then the “Stodoła” club, which strongly shaped her stage presence and relationship with text.
She released her first album in 1972, and it included “Koncert jesienny na dwa świerszcze i wiatr w kominie,” one of the songs most closely associated with her.
For years she was considered one of the finest interpreters of Agnieszka Osiecka’s work, and their artistic bond became one of the key threads in Polish literary song.
