Cztery Refy are one of the most important and stylistically consistent groups in the history of the Polish shanty scene, founded in Łódź in 1985 by members of the Academic Sailing Club and musicians previously connected with Refpatent. That origin matters, because the band did not emerge as a casual festival act but from an actual sailing community and from earlier work on traditional maritime repertoire. The core of Cztery Refy grew out of Refpatent, a group described as the first Polish act to popularize old sea songs on a larger scale through its own lyrics and translations.
The band’s repertoire includes more than 250 pieces, and most of the texts are the group’s own adaptations and translations, many of which later became part of the Polish shanty canon.
Cztery Refy have consistently used only acoustic instruments, including anglo concertina, bodhrán, Jew’s harp, whistles, guitar, mandolin and fiddle, which gives the group a strongly traditional sonic identity.
In their repertoire, classic shanties and shanty-styled pieces are usually performed a cappella, bringing the band close to the older functional spirit of maritime work songs.
