Zakopower was founded in 2005 by Sebastian Karpiel-Bułecka and from the beginning was conceived as a band that would connect the musical language of Podhale with a modern live and studio sound. What set it apart was the way it treated folklore not as something to preserve in a museum frame, but as a living source for energetic songs built on strings, voices, folk instrumentation and a stronger rock rhythm section. The debut album “Music Hal”, released in 2005, quickly drew both audience and industry attention, and the single “Kiebyś ty...” brought the band an important award in Opole. The debut album “Music Hal” immediately positioned the band as a fresh force in Polish folk by combining traditional Highland melodies with modern club-oriented production by Mateusz Pospieszalski.
The song “Kiebyś ty...” already brought the group a jury award at the “Premieres” concert during the 42nd Polish Song Festival in Opole in its debut year.
The second album, “Na siedem”, was distributed together with the newspaper “Polska The Times” in 2007 and reportedly sold more than 600,000 copies, which was an unusual move even by the standards of that media era.
On “Na siedem”, the band broadened its sound with guests from different musical worlds, including Nigel Kennedy, Kayah and Mamadou Diouf, showing that Zakopower was never interested in staying inside a narrow folk lane.
