Tulia
Tulia is a Polish folk‑inspired group formed in 2017 in Szczecin by singers Tulia Biczak, Patrycja Nowicka, Joanna Sinkiewicz, and Dominika Siepka, all of whom had backgrounds in local song‑and‑dance ensembles. From the outset, the band focused on the traditional Eastern‑European “white voice” technique and combined it with contemporary production, guitars, synths, and drums, creating a distinctive hybrid of folk aesthetics and modern alt‑pop. The group first drew major attention with a folk rendition of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” released on YouTube before their album debut, which attracted not only Polish listeners but, according to coverage, also positive reactions from Depeche Mode...
Artist Trivia
- All members of Tulia have backgrounds in traditional song‑and‑dance ensembles, which they identify as the source of their interest in archaic singing techniques and folk instruments.
- In their versions of “Enjoy the Silence” and “Nothing Else Matters,” the band applied white‑voice techniques and folk arrangements so consistently that the Metallica cover became one of their first viral successes.
- “Jeszcze Cię nie ma” won the Grand Prix, the audience award, and the ZAiKS prize in Opole’s “Premiery” contest, one of the rare cases of a single song sweeping all major awards there.
- The debut album “Tulia” earned the group a Fryderyk for Phonographic Debut of the Year and achieved gold and then platinum certification in Poland.
