Edyta Geppert is a Polish singer and interpreter who built one of the most distinctive stage identities in the history of Polish literary song. She is most often associated with songs such as “Jaka róża, taki cierń,” “Och, życie kocham cię nad życie,” “Zamiast,” “Szukaj mnie,” and “Idź swoją drogą,” yet her importance comes not only from hits but from her exceptional interpretive discipline and her carefully shaped recital form. She is the only Polish female singer to have won the Grand Prix at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole three times, for “Jaka róża, taki cierń,” “Och, życie kocham cię nad życie,” and “Idź swoją drogą.”
In 1985 her performance of “Zamiast” was censored by television because the lyrics were seen as a critical portrayal of life in Poland, making it one of the more striking intersections of song and late-communist censorship.
She does not like being reduced to the label of sung poetry and prefers to describe herself simply as “a singer who sings songs,” putting interpretation above genre branding.
Her repertoire is much broader than her image as a lyrical performer might suggest, because she has also sung cabaret material, country, hard rock, heavy metal, and even rap-influenced songs.
