Exodus was formed in Warsaw in the autumn of 1976 at the Riviera-Remont club, growing out of the earlier group Źródło built around brothers Andrzej and Wojciech Puczyński. The original line-up also included Paweł Birula, Władysław Komendarek and Jerzy Machnikowski, who was replaced a year later by Zbigniew Fyk. The first clearly confirmed artistic breakthrough came in 1977, when the band recorded the suite “Nadzieje, niepokoje”, then developed a professional stage program and began performing regularly in different Polish cities. Exodus was sometimes described as the “Polish Yes” because of its strong tendency to merge rock with classical influences and extended art-rock structures.
The band created not only concert programs but also full musical theater productions, with “Nadzieje, niepokoje”, “Maski” and “Ostatni teatrzyk objazdowy” becoming the best known.
Two of the group’s television productions were filmed by Polish Television, but the tapes were later erased and only a fragment survived in the film “Mysz”.
The 1980 album “The Most Beautiful Day” reached Gold Record status with sales of 200,000 copies, an impressive result for a Polish progressive rock act.
