Flapjack was founded in December 1993 by Robert “Litza” Friedrich and Maciej “Ślimak” Starosta, who were both also active in Acid Drinkers at the time. At first, the project was meant to be a friendly side outlet and a way to play heavier, rawer music drawing from thrash, hardcore and the emerging rapcore wave. The early lineup took time to settle, but the real breakthrough came during the debut album sessions, when Grzegorz “Guzik” Guziński joined the material and gave it a distinctive vocal identity. That led to “Ruthless Kick” in 1994, a record that was very well received and earned the band a Fryderyk nomination for Debut of the Year. Flapjack was born as a release valve after Acid Drinkers, because Litza and Ślimak wanted something heavier, more direct and less driven by humorous lyrics.
The band’s name was chosen only after the first songs had already been recorded, and it came from the title of one of those tracks, later picking up the familiar Polish “pancake” association.
Grzegorz “Guzik” Guziński played a decisive role in shaping the debut, joining during the session itself, and according to Litza he was responsible for about 70 percent of the final impact of “Ruthless Kick”.
The debut quickly pushed the group into the live circuit, because in 1994 Flapjack played Jarocin and supported Biohazard at Warsaw’s Stodoła club.
