Moskwa
Moskwa is one of the most recognizable bands in Polish punk rock, founded in September 1983 in Łódź by Paweł “Guma” Gumola, Piotr “Rogoza” Rogoziński and Tomasz “Pałker” Gron. As early as the autumn of that year, the group was already appearing at the festivals “Prawdziwe Brzmienie Łodzi” and “Kontrrockowisko,” which makes 1983 the safest date for its true stage debut. The breakthrough came in 1984, when Moskwa recorded its first demo, sent it to the Jarocin organizers, and became one of the festival’s laureates, entering the “golden eight.” From that point on, the band quickly grew into one of the key names in the Polish punk underground. The band’s first phase was built on harsh, fast and direct music...
Artist Trivia
- Moskwa entered the nationwide circuit very quickly, because after sending out its first demo the band became a Jarocin laureate in 1984 and joined the festival’s famous “golden eight.”
- For a period, the group performed under the name M.kwa, which reflected the political climate of the time and shows how provocative even the band’s name could be in that era.
- In its early years, Moskwa was associated with an exceptionally fast and aggressive sound, and later descriptions repeatedly compared the band to Discharge while calling it one of the fastest acts in Poland.
- The band was documented in important films about the Polish alternative scene, including Piotr Łazarkiewicz’s “Fala” and later the BBC production “My Blood, Your Blood.”
