Grzegorz Turnau is one of the most important contemporary figures in Polish literary and author-driven song, an artist long associated with Kraków, the piano, and music deeply rooted in poetry. He was born on July 31, 1967 in Kraków, studied piano, graduated from the August Witkowski secondary school, and went on to study English philology at the Jagiellonian University. From the beginning, his repertoire stood out for setting poetry to music, drawing on texts by Shakespeare, Baczyński, Witkacy, Ewa Lipska, Gałczyński, and Michał Zabłocki, which gives his songs a place between concert performance and literature.
Turnau holds an unusually strong awards record in his field, with 9 Fryderyk awards, 2 Wiktors, the Grand Prix at the Opole festival, and state distinctions including the Gold Cross of Merit and the Gloria Artis medal.
Alongside his stage career, he steadily developed as a composer for theatre and film, writing music for productions directed by Jarosław Kilian and for films such as “Zakochany anioł” and “Niezawodny system.”
