Krystyna Janda is one of the central figures of postwar Polish culture, best known as a film and theatre actress, but also active as a director, author and performer of literary and theatrical song repertoire. Born on 18 December 1952 in Starachowice, she trained in Warsaw and made her early stage-screen breakthrough while still a student, appearing in Television Theatre in 1974 as Masha in “Three Sisters”. She reached a wide audience with Andrzej Wajda’s 1976 film “Man of Marble,” where her portrayal of Agnieszka introduced a sharp, determined and modern female presence that became iconic in Polish cinema. Her role as Agnieszka in “Man of Marble” became one of the defining screen performances of late communist-era Polish cinema and launched her high-profile collaboration with Andrzej Wajda.
Her performance in “Interrogation” is widely regarded as one of the landmark roles in politically charged Polish cinema, with the film itself shaped by censorship and delayed release.
She did not remain only an actress, she also moved into directing, staging theatre productions from 1993 onward and making her film directing debut with “Pestka” in 1995.
She built a lasting cultural infrastructure around her work through the Krystyna Janda Foundation for Culture and by leading Warsaw’s Polonia Theatre and Och-Teatr.
