Krzysztof Komeda, born Krzysztof Trzciński, is one of the central figures in the history of Polish jazz and film music. He was born on 27 April 1931 in Poznań and became known as a pianist, composer, and physician, with his artistic path developing alongside a medical career from the beginning. He studied piano from childhood, but formally completed medical studies and specialized as an ear, nose, and throat doctor. At first, he pursued jazz somewhat discreetly, and the name Komeda helped him separate his medical profession from his musical work at a time when jazz still lacked secure social and institutional standing in Poland. He trained as an ear, nose, and throat doctor and for a time lived in parallel as both a physician and a jazz musician, which was highly unusual in 1950s Poland.
He adopted the name “Komeda” in part to separate his jazz life from his medical profession and to manage the tension between those two worlds.
The Komeda Sextet was regarded as the first Polish jazz group to play modern jazz at such a distinctly original level.
His 1965 album Astigmatic is widely considered one of the decisive milestones in European jazz, proving that the continent could develop its own language independent of American models.
