Kuba Więcek

Kuba Więcek, born Jakub Więcek, is one of the most important Polish jazz musicians of the younger generation. He was born on 29 October 1994 in Rybnik and developed early toward broadly understood improvised music, although he initially studied cello. He later moved to saxophone, and that instrument became the center of his artistic identity. He studied first for a year in Amsterdam and then at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, while also graduating from the Academy of Music in Kraków. His major breakthrough came in 2017 with Another Raindrop, recorded in a trio with Michał Barański and Łukasz Żyta.   • He started on cello and only later switched to saxophone, which eventually became his main instrument.
  • His debut Another Raindrop was the first debut in the cult Polish Jazz series in 28 years, and it made him the youngest debut artist in that series’ history.
  • In 2018, he won a Fryderyk for Jazz Phonographic Debut of the Year and the Polish Radio Channel Three Mateusz award for the same breakthrough period.
