MacIej Balcar
Maciej Balcar is an artist whose standing in Polish music rests on several parallel roles, rock vocalist, songwriter, stage and film actor, and the longtime frontman of one of the most important bands in the history of Polish blues-rock. The broad public knows him above all through Dżem, but his artistic path began earlier and was from the outset more author-driven than purely interpretive. He was born on 1 September 1971 in Ostrów Wielkopolski. He completed music school in piano, later studied architecture at Wrocław University of Technology, and from an early age he wrote songs, sang, and played with various bands, most often blues formations, although the sources also confirm punk-rock and thrash-metal...
Artist Trivia
- Balcar is left-handed, yet he plays and composes on right-handed guitars without reversing the strings, which is one of the most unusual elements of his technique.
- By formal education he is not only a musician but also an architect, having graduated from Wrocław University of Technology.
- Before joining Dżem, he won a casting for a leading role in a feature-film-related project with Robert Chojnacki, but turned it down because he wanted to sing his own material.
- For 23 years, from February 2001 to 6 April 2024, he served as Dżem’s vocalist, stepping into one of the most historically burdened frontman roles in Polish rock after Ryszard Riedel.
