The xx

The xx are an English indie pop / indie rock band from Wandsworth, London, formed in 2005 by Elliott School friends Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim, later joined by producer and percussionist Jamie Smith, known as Jamie xx. In the early phase, the live and studio line up also included guitarist and keyboardist Baria Qureshi, who left the band shortly after the release of their debut album. From the outset, The xx became known for a minimalist, introspective sound built around sparse guitars, deep bass, subtle electronics and the intimate dual vocals of Romy and Oliver. Their breakthrough came in 2009 with the self produced debut album “xx”, released by Young Turks and largely recorded during night sessions...

Artist Trivia

  • Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim first met at London’s Elliott School, which also produced members of Hot Chip and Four Tet, underlining the school’s role as a key incubator of alternative music.
  • The debut album “xx” was largely recorded at night in a small Young Turks studio space, which forced the band towards a quiet, sparse sound that later became their signature.
  • “xx” won the Mercury Prize in 2010 and was included in NME’s 2013 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, cementing its canonical status in British indie.
  • “Intro” is one of the most heavily licensed indie instrumentals of the past decade, appearing in adverts, TV shows and countless online videos, which pushed The xx far beyond the usual alternative audience.
