Tomasz Stańko was one of the defining figures of Polish and European jazz, a trumpeter, composer, and improviser whose sound became internationally recognizable far beyond Poland. Born on 11 July 1942 in Rzeszów, he grew up in a musical household, studied violin and piano early on, and later trained as a trumpet player at a music academy in Kraków. His entry into the professional scene came in the early 1960s, when he formed Jazz Darings after graduation, a group regarded as one of Europe’s first free jazz ensembles. He was among the first European trumpeters to develop a truly individual free jazz language rather than simply echoing American models, which gave him a singular place in European jazz history.
He co-created Krzysztof Komeda’s Astigmatic, an album widely regarded as one of the landmark achievements of European jazz.
His collaboration with ECM, launched in the mid-1970s, became one of the central pillars of his international career and helped establish his reputation on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the 1980s, he experimented with electronics, reggae, latino influences, and hybrid forms through groups such as C.O.C.X. and Freelectronic, showing that he was never confined to orthodox acoustic jazz.
