Bielizna is one of the most distinctive bands to emerge from the Gdańsk Alternative Scene, founded in Gdańsk by Jarosław Janiszewski and Jarosław Figura. Sources are not fully consistent on the exact starting year, with both 1984 and 1985 appearing in circulation, but the stronger weight of newer biographical material points to 1984. At the beginning, the group operated under the more provocative name Bielizna Goeringa, which was later shortened. From the outset, the central figure was Jarek Janiszewski, the band’s lyricist and vocalist, whose ironic, grotesque and often socially observant writing became one of Bielizna’s defining traits. The band originally used the name Bielizna Goeringa, and shortening it to Bielizna was a response to unwanted associations and the kind of audience the first name began to attract.
Bielizna belongs to the core circle of the Gdańsk Alternative Scene, one of the key local movements in the history of Polish alternative music in the 1980s.
The 1988 debut album “Taniec lekkich goryli” grew into a defining record for the band, and English-language descriptions stress its fusion of Polish punk with British jangle pop.
The band’s identity has always been built to a large extent around Jarek Janiszewski, whose lyrics and distinctive vocal delivery are repeatedly described as the central feature of Bielizna’s style.
