Alians is a band from Piła, founded in 1990, that built its identity from the start around a crossover of punk, hardcore, reggae, ska and folk elements. Over time that blend came to be described as the “Piła sound” or “punky reggae,” while accordion and an expanded brass-based setup became part of the group’s signature style. The band’s first concert took place on May 19, 1990 in Bydgoszcz, and the founding core consisted of Rafał “Kazi” Kasprzak, Michał “Dósiołek” Thiede and Dariusz “Q” Kułak. Alians stood out on the Polish punk scene not only because it mixed hardcore, reggae and ska, but also because it used accordion, an instrument rarely associated with that kind of repertoire.
The band shared stages with acts such as Fugazi, No Means No, The Ukrainians and Chumbawamba, which shows how strongly it was connected to the international alternative circuit.
According to the available historical overview, Alians had played 470 concerts across Poland and several European countries by November 2007, which is a major figure for a band operating outside the mainstream.
The group’s lyrics were politically and socially engaged from the start, first drawing heavily on anarchist thought and later also on revolutionary movements from Latin America.
