Alibabki
Alibabki were formed in Warsaw in the winter of 1963 from members of the Polish Scouting Association Choir, and from the outset they were built around close harmony, ensemble discipline and a truly collective identity rather than a single lead star. Their public debut came in January 1964 at the First National Symposium of Scouting Songs in Przemyśl, where they appeared as the Vocal Sextet and adopted the name Alibabki. At first they performed mainly scouting repertoire, but they quickly moved beyond that framework and developed a broader artistic language under the guidance of musical directors such as Jan Rysiński, Zbigniew Ciechan and later Juliusz Loranc. Artist Trivia
- The group’s name was not fixed from the start, and according to the members’ recollections it grew out of audience shouts of “ale babki!” during an early performance in Przemyśl.
- In 1965 Alibabki recorded “W rytmach Jamaica Ska” with Tajfuny, a release often described as Poland’s first ska record, which is why the group is still seen as an early Polish gateway to Jamaican-inspired music.
- Their legacy is not limited to their own hits, because they also provided backing vocals for major Polish artists including Czesław Niemen, Maryla Rodowicz, Marek Grechuta, Breakout and Czerwone Gitary.
- Constant line-up changes led to the unusual situation of two different acts performing under the same name, and the dispute ended in a landmark court case that restored the name to the founding members.
