Angélique Kidjo
Angélique Kidjo is a Beninese musician, singer songwriter and activist who has become one of the most celebrated artists in contemporary global music. She was born on July 14, 1960 in Ouidah, Dahomey, now Benin, and grew up in Cotonou in a large family that combined Fon and Yoruba cultural backgrounds. Her parents ran a theater troupe and encouraged the children to perform, which gave Kidjo early experience on stage as a singer and dancer. Kidjo released her first album "Pretty" in 1981 in Benin. Following a political coup in 1983 and subsequent censorship of her work, she moved to Paris to pursue music without political repression.
