Bakshish
Bakshish are one of the pioneering bands of Polish reggae, founded in Kluczbork in 1982 by Jarosław “Jarex” Kowalczyk. Their early period moved through ska, rocksteady, reggae and even some punk-rooted impulses, but reggae and dub became the lasting core of the group’s sound. The band made its mark on the Polish live circuit very quickly. In their first years they played student clubs and local events, reached the final of a major Polish Radio 3 contest, won an award at Jarocin, and supported Misty in Roots, which carried real symbolic weight within the Polish music context of the 1980s. Over time, Bakshish built their reputation not only through concerts but also through albums that became important...
Artist Trivia
- Bakshish is widely described as one of the earliest and most important Polish reggae bands, with sources treating them as a foundational act for the local scene rather than only a long-running live group.
- Very early in their career, the band reached the final of Polish Radio 3’s “Kto najlepszy w tym rocku?” contest, won an award at Jarocin in 1983, and returned there as a featured act the following year.
- In 1983 they supported Misty in Roots in Wrocław during what sources describe as the first Polish tour by a Jamaican reggae act, making it an important moment both for the band and for reggae history in Poland.
- A television concert recorded in that era was announced twice but never broadcast because of major political events tied to the sudden deaths of Soviet leaders.
