Coals is a Silesian duo formed by Katarzyna Kowalczyk and Łukasz Rozmysłowski, active since September 2014. From the beginning, the project developed at the intersection of electronics and alternative music, but its real strength came from building a distinct identity based on ethereality, melancholy, and a strong sense of pop form. The duo first gained attention through homemade recordings uploaded to YouTube. It moved beyond a local level very quickly, because within a matter of months it was already appearing at important festivals and soon went on to take part in the historic first KEXP session by a Polish act. Coals were invited to record the first KEXP session in the history of Polish music, which remains one of the strongest markers of their international recognition.
The duo moved beyond the local scene very quickly, because after only about half a year of activity they were already being booked for major festivals such as OFF and Soundrive.
Their name refers directly to Silesia and the mining heritage of the region they come from.
Coals have become one of the most internationally active Polish alternative duos, with sources listing festivals such as Primavera Sound, Reeperbahn, Eurosonic, Iceland Airwaves, Positivus, and Pohoda.
