Filipinki were founded in November 1959 in Szczecin at the local economic high school, and the group was created by Jan Janikowski. Even the origin story is unusual, because the band was formed for a school anniversary and then very quickly moved beyond the scale of a local amateur project. Their competition debut came in 1960 in “Szukamy młodych talentów,” while a major rise in recognition followed the 1962 radio contest “Mikrofon dla wszystkich.” That was the moment when Filipinki started to evolve from a promising school ensemble into a nationally visible youth entertainment act.   • The group took its name after visiting the editorial office of the popular girls’ magazine Filipinka.
