Jonasz Kofta was born in 1942 in Mizocz, Volhynia, as Janusz Kofta. After the war his family lived in Wrocław, Katowice, Łódź, and Poznań, and he later became closely linked with Warsaw, where he studied painting and entered the artistic scene. In the early 1960s he co-created the cabaret Hybrydy, which became one of the breeding grounds of modern Polish literary song and student satire. In 1964 he became its literary director, and later also worked with Teatr Syrena, Polish Radio Program 3, and the cabaret “Pod Egidą.” His printed debut came in 1966 in the magazine “Szpilki,” but the full strength of his talent appeared in song writing. - He graduated from the Fine Arts High School in Poznań and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, so his background was visual as well as literary.
- In 1962 he co-created the student cabaret Hybrydy, and in 1964 became its literary director.
- From 1968 to 1980 he was closely associated with the cabaret “Pod Egidą”, for which he wrote and in which he also performed.
- From 1964 onward he collaborated with Polish Radio Program 3 as both writer and performer of satirical broadcasts.
