Tymon Tymanski
Tymon Tymański is one of the most distinctive and influential figures in Polish alternative music after 1989. He is a composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, producer, writer, and performer whose activity extends far beyond the standard role of a bandleader. He was born on 30 September 1968 in Gdańsk as Ryszard Waldemar Tymański. Sources note that he began English studies but abandoned them in favor of music and literature, which fits a biography shaped from the start more by creative impulse than by an institutional career path. - He is widely credited with creating the term “yass,” which became the name of one of the most important Polish alternative-jazz movements of the 1990s.
- He is one of the rare artists who function equally naturally as a double bassist, guitarist, vocalist, composer, writer, and performer.
- He has led or co-led an unusually large number of bands, including Miłość, Kury, Czan, NRD, Tymon i Trupy, Masło, Poganie, The Users, Tymański Yass Ensemble, Tymon & The Transistors, and Mu.
- Kury’s “P.O.L.O.V.I.R.U.S.” became one of the most cult and subversive Polish albums of the 1990s, and the artist’s Instagram description notes that it won a Fryderyk in 1998.
