Kabanos was founded in August 1997 in Piaseczno by Zenek and Zbyszek Szajbner, initially as a project driven more by imagination, humor and creative impulse than by conventional musicianship. In its earliest phase, the band built material from rock and metal backing tracks, quotes from Stanisław Bareja films and absurd lyrics, and its first real breakthrough in visibility came around 2000 through airplay on Radiostacja. Its proper live chapter began in September 2001, when Kabanos played its first concert in Piaseczno and quickly discovered that it already had an audience familiar with the material before a standard stage debut path had even formed. Kabanos began in the most homemade way possible, because the song “Kaszanka” and the entire “Hej Wiśta Hola” cassette were created almost immediately, without instruments or a studio, using only a tape recorder, favorite-band cassettes and the founders’ ideas.
The band gained its first real visibility before it had a proper live lineup, because the breakthrough came through Radiostacja and Piotr “Makak” Szarłacki’s “Makakofonia” in 2000.
Kabanos’ first concert in Piaseczno in 2001 drew more than 250 people who already knew the lyrics from the internet and radio, so the audience arrived before the band had a conventional live debut path.
The 2002 track “Za X” was the group’s first fully original song, because its earlier material had been built on cut-out backing tracks, Bareja film quotes and absurdist lyrics.
