Kobranocka is one of the most recognizable Polish rock bands, originating from the city of Toruń and officially formed in 1985 by vocalist and guitarist Andrzej “Kobra” Kraiński together with lyricist Andrzej Marek Michorzewski, known under the moniker Ordynat Michorowski. Before they adopted the name Kobranocka, the group briefly operated as Latający Pisuar, which already reflected their ironic and provocative attitude towards reality. The band’s name Kobranocka is a deliberate wordplay combining the leader’s nickname “Kobra” with the Polish word “dobranocka” for a bedtime children’s TV show, giving it an inherently tongue in cheek and ironic character.
Many of the lyrics were written by Marek Andrzej “Ordynat Michorowski” Michorzewski, who is a psychiatrist by profession, which helps explain the abstract, often darkly humorous lyrical tone of Kobranocka’s songs.
A peculiar paradox of the band is that their signature hit “Kocham cię jak Irlandię” is said to have “nothing in common” with Kobranocka’s usual, harsher punk oriented style built on pacifist and anti war messages.
In their early years the band had a strong relationship with the youth radio station Rozgłośnia Harcerska, which played their recordings and helped them transition from the local Toruń scene to the nationwide rock circuit.
