Marek Grechuta

Marek Michał Grechuta was a Polish singer, composer, song poet, and one of the absolutely central figures of Polish artistic music in the second half of the twentieth century. He was born on 10 December 1945 in Zamość and later moved to Kraków, where he studied architecture at the Kraków University of Technology. It was the student period that proved decisive for his artistic path. In Kraków he met Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz and co-created Anawa, which quickly evolved from a student cabaret into an important musical group. As early as 1967, Grechuta and Anawa drew attention at the Student Song Festival thanks to “Tango Anawa”. In the following years, his best known and most lasting songs were created. Works...

Artist Trivia

  • Grechuta was trained as an architect and studied at the Kraków University of Technology, which shows the breadth of his interests beyond music itself.
  • It was in Kraków, during his studies, that he met Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz and co-created Anawa, one of the most important groups in the history of Polish artistic song.
  • His music is difficult to classify, because it combined sung poetry with rock, jazz-rock, folk-like melody, and an author driven song form.
  • His best known songs include “Dni, których nie znamy,” “Nie dokazuj,” “Będziesz moją panią,” and “Korowód,” all of which entered the Polish cultural canon.
