Republika
Republika is one of the most important Polish rock and new wave bands, formed in Toruń in 1981 out of the earlier group Res Publica. The classic core lineup consisted of Grzegorz Ciechowski, Zbigniew Krzywański, Paweł Kuczyński and Sławomir Ciesielski, and from the start the band stood out through its sharp black-and-white visual identity, minimalist aesthetic and a sound positioned between post-punk, new wave and art rock. The safest phonographic debut point for Republika is 1983 and the album Nowe sytuacje, although the group’s core had existed earlier under the name Res Publica and audiences already knew Grzegorz Ciechowski as the leader of that transforming formation in 1980. Nowe sytuacje is now treated...
Artist Trivia
- Republika grew directly out of the band Res Publica, and Grzegorz Ciechowski himself entered that earlier formation in 1979 as a flutist before taking over its artistic direction and turning it into Republika.
- The band’s black-and-white visual identity became so distinctive that it still functions as one of the most recognisable aesthetic codes in the history of Polish rock.
- Nowe sytuacje from 1983 is regularly treated as one of the key Polish new wave records, and Spotify still shows the full album in the band’s official catalogue.
- After Republika broke up in 1986, Grzegorz Ciechowski built a strong parallel career under the name Obywatel G.C., which caused the histories of the band and his solo work to overlap for years.
