Skankan
Skankan are one of the key names in Polish ska, a band founded in Sosnowiec in 1993 that has always mixed ska, reggae and rock and roll with high live energy and a strong horn section. The group was originally supposed to perform only once, at a WOŚP charity event, but it quickly became clear that the one-off idea had the potential to grow into a full band. After a year of rehearsals and line-up consolidation, Skankan became an important part of the developing Polish ska scene. Their style drew at the same time from British bands such as Madness, The Specials and The Clash and from Jamaican ska and reggae traditions, which made their sound feel fresh, danceable and distinctive in 1990s Poland. - Skankan was originally meant to be a one-off project created for a charity concert tied to WOŚP, but the audience response pushed the musicians to turn it into a full band.
- Their 1996 cassette “Skankan ożywia trupy” has been described as one of the first Polish studio ska albums, which gives the group a significant place in the history of the genre in Poland.
- The band opened the very first Przystanek Woodstock in Czymanów in 1995 and then kept returning to the festival over the following years.
- Skankan’s reach was not limited to Poland, as their tracks appeared on foreign compilations and the band played in German clubs as well as festivals in Germany and the Czech Republic.
