Aya RL is one of the key Polish new wave bands of the 1980s, founded in Warsaw in 1983 by Igor Czerniawski, Paweł Kukiz and Jarosław Lach. The project grew out of Czerniawski’s collaboration with Lach and Kukiz, who had previously co-founded Hak, after the musicians met at the Jarocin festival in 1983. The band’s first major breakthrough came in 1984, when Aya RL appeared at Jarocin as a trio and made a strong impact with the song “Skóra”. That track quickly became their signature song and reached high positions on Polish charts, even though the group aimed for a broader artistic identity than that of a one-hit act. Artist Trivia

The name Aya RL originally stood for Aya Red Love, which reflects the project’s more art-oriented and less literal identity in its early phase.
“Skóra” became the band’s breakthrough song and a major hit, but the group’s own story suggests it also created a misleading public image, because Aya RL was never meant to be a simple pop-oriented act.
The band deliberately left “Skóra” off its 1985 debut album, even though it was already their best-known song.
After the first album, Jarosław Lach left for the United States, which effectively closed the band’s first classic line-up period and changed its later development.
